Functions and organizational setup of the mines & geology department

Functions

Exploration and Prospecting

  • Conduct reconnaissance to identify new mineral deposits and execute prospecting and drilling operations to explore mineral resources.
  • Undertake exploratory mining activities as needed.
  • Execute engineering geology projects when required.
  • Perform laboratory-scale "Mineral Beneficiation Studies" and prepare feasibility reports for potential mineral deposits.
  • Conduct chemical analyses, physical tests, and petrographic studies for minerals, ores, and rocks.

 

Regulatory and Administrative

Oversee scientific and planned exploitation of the state's mineral resources as per the MMRD Act, 1957, and associated rules.Collect mineral revenue (royalty and fees) and recommend strategies to enhance revenue generation.Develop infrastructural facilities to support mines and mineral-based industries.Enforce measures to prevent unauthorized excavation, removal, and misuse of minerals.Promote conservation of mineral resources and restore ecological balance.Assist mining lessees through technical advice, equipment hire, and loan advancements.Support and monitor the development of mining and mineral-based industries in the state, emphasizing scientific methods.

Miscellaneous

Advise the State Government on matters related to mines and minerals. Liaise with national organizations involved in mining and geology, including:

Organizational Setup

The department is headed by the Director of Mines & Geology, supported by an Additional Director (Geology) and an Additional Director (Mining), along with their respective staff.
